Two couples share ownership of this midcentury duplex and, all designers themselves, took the lead on selecting all of their finishes, with similar but different color schemes. Cabinetry by Reform, in some cases over Ikea bases. Tile by Heath and Fireclay, both local San Francisco tile makers. This collaboration between designer owners and architect worked to tuck beams and columns into walls and ceiling for clean spans, insulated the envelope for greater energy efficiency, and added bathrooms & laundry closets in each duplex. We also added a rear deck for the upper unit access to the yard, with a walkable skylight to bring light down to the lower level. This project began while Fumiko was at Pencil Box Architects.
